Kitui County is set to commemorate World Cancer Awareness Day on Wednesday, 4th February 2027, with a major event planned in Mwingi Town. The Chief Officer for Drugs and Medical Services, Mr. Kamba, confirmed that the county will host the commemoration at Mwingi Level Four Hospital in collaboration with various health partners.
The annual event aims to raise public awareness on cancer prevention, early detection, and access to treatment services. It brings together county health officials, development partners, healthcare workers, and members of the public in a collective effort to address the growing cancer burden in the county.
As part of the activities, a cancer awareness walk will be conducted along the streets of Mwingi Town. The walk is intended to sensitize residents on the importance of regular screening, healthy lifestyles, and seeking medical attention early to improve treatment outcomes.
Speaking to the media, the Oncology Clinical Officer, Madam Martha Douglas together with her colleague Dr Muthini, said the County Government of Kitui Together with partners we are working towards cancer prevention; early detection and treatment She emphasized that awareness and early diagnosis remain key pillars in fighting the disease.
Madam Douglas noted that free cancer screening services will be offered throughout the day at Mwingi Level Four Hospital. The screenings will cover various cancer-related conditions, enabling residents to know their status and receive timely referrals where necessary.
She further urged members of the public to take advantage of the free services, adding that similar screening activities will also be conducted in other hospitals across the county to ensure wider reach, especially for residents in remote areas.
Mr. Kamba said the County Government of Kitui, under the leadership of Governor Dr. Julius Malombe, has made significant investments in the health sector to improve cancer care. He noted that the county has procured modern medical equipment and essential drugs to support diagnosis and treatment.
The Chief Officer added that the county has also strengthened human resources by deploying able, skilled, and dedicated healthcare staff to handle cancer-related illnesses across health facilities in Kitui County.
Kamba revealed that over 600 cancer cases have so far been managed at the Kitui County Cancer Centre. According to him, many patients have shown positive responses to treatment, a development he attributed to improved facilities, early detection, and consistent follow-up care.
He reiterated the countyโs commitment to enhancing cancer services and called on residents to embrace regular screening and healthy living. County health officials expressed optimism that sustained awareness campaigns and partnerships will significantly reduce the cancer burden in Kitui County in the coming years.
