Mwingi North University and College Students Boycott Constituency Bursary Exercise

The Mwingi North University and College Students Association (MNUCSA) has announced its decision to withdraw from the ongoing Mwingi North Constituency bursary exercise, citing constitutional and legal concerns over the process.

In a press statement released on Saturday, MNUCSA said the decision was informed by persistent issues including lack of transparency, inequitable allocation of funds, weak accountability mechanisms, and alleged non-compliance with constitutional principles in the administration of bursary funds under the current leadership of the area MP, Hon. Musyimi Nzengu.

The association argued that the current bursary allocation process fails to meet key provisions of the Constitution of Kenya, 2010, particularly those relating to good governance, equality, the right to education, and responsible management of public finances. MNUCSA referenced several constitutional articles, including Articles 10, 27, 43, 201, and 232, alongside sections of the Public Finance Management Act, 2012, and the Leadership and Integrity Act, 2012.

According to the studentsโ€™ body, continued participation in the bursary exercise under the prevailing conditions would be unlawful and contrary to the public interest.

โ€œAs an association, we are exercising our constitutional right to lawful dissent and institutional accountability,โ€ the statement read, adding that the studentsโ€™ body is calling for immediate administrative, procedural, and structural reforms to align the bursary process with constitutional and statutory requirements.

MNUCSA further warned that it reserves the right to pursue all lawful remedies, including administrative review and judicial intervention, should the alleged constitutional violations persist.

The statement was issued on January 18, 2026, and signed by MNUCSA President Michael Muthui.
