Principal Secretary for Livestock Development, Hon. Jonathan Mueke, earlier today convened a high-level consultative meeting aimed at expanding youth involvement in the livestock sector. The session brought together key actors from government agencies, training institutions, and the private sector to chart a unified strategy for empowering young people through livestock-related enterprises.

Speaking during the meeting, PS Mueke emphasized the need to leverage innovation, technology, and entrepreneurship to unlock job and income opportunities for the growing youth population. He noted that the livestock value chain offers immense potential if young people are equipped with the right skills, tools, and market linkages to participate meaningfully.

The discussions highlighted immediate opportunities where youth can take the lead, including fodder production, aggregation and logistics services, animal health support, value addition, digital livestock solutions, and climate-smart livestock practices. Participants underscored that these areas hold both economic promise and long-term sustainability for communities.

To achieve this, the stakeholders agreed on strengthening collaboration among training institutions, private sector players, and government agencies. The meeting reaffirmed the importance of a whole-of-government approach to ensure that policies, programs, and investments align with the goal of enhancing youth engagement in the livestock sector.

Going forward, the State Department of Livestock will work closely with all stakeholders to define clear activities, key performance indicators, and expected outcomes. The roadmap aims to position the livestock sector as a central driver of youth employment, enterprise growth, and sustainable livelihoods across the country.
