On Tuesday May 25, 2021- A declaration was made by Sand dealers in Mwingi to enforce a complete ban on sand harvesting and selling along River Kivou.
Confirmed during a day long consultative meeting between Governor Charity Ngilu and the sand traders, it has now been unanimously agreed that the youth engaged in the vice will engage in alternative businesses along the riverbed while they actively participated in enforcing the ban.
Speaking while addressing the group mostly comprised of budding young men and women, Governor Ngilu promised to ensure the young men were fully facilitated to start the alternative businesses immediately.
Ranging from car washes, to water pumps to facilitate in farming along the river beds, the agreement will see these young men desist from sand harvesting; a vice that has seen a majority of rivers run dry.
Governor Charity Ngilu was accompanied by Water and Agriculture chief officer Mr. Kioko Kiilu..
