Why Kitui Deputy GOVERNOR Kanani held Meeting With Kora KWS Officers

On Thursday, January 26, 2023 – Kitui Deputy Governor H.E. Augustine Kanani hosted Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) officers attached to Kora and Meru National Parks and Wildlife Clubs of Kenya, Kitui branch, for a courtesy meeting in his office.

The team, led by Meru National Park’s Senior Warden Kitavi Kaloki, briefed the Deputy Governor on the upcoming World Wildlife Day celebrations slated for March 3, 2023.

The World Wildlife Day commemoration for the Eastern Conservation Area, which comprises Meru National Park, Kora National Park, Mwingi National Reserve and Bisanadi National Reserve, is rotational and this year’s fete will be held in Kitui County.

World Wildlife Day was pronounced by the 68th United Nations Assembly in 2013 to celebrate and raise awareness on the world’s fauna and flora throughout the world.

This year’s event will be themed “Partnerships for Wildlife Conservation” and will bring together the various wildlife conservation stakeholders and interest groups including young learners in primary schools’ wildlife and environmental clubs.

The occasion will also offer relevant stakeholders a platform to exchange views on possible areas of collaboration towards the promotion of harmonious human-wildlife co-existence besides coming up with solutions on sustainable management of wild animals and their habitats.

The Deputy Governor, in his remarks, commended the Kenya Wildlife Service workforce for their forefront role in wildlife conservation within Kitui County and beyond.

He highlighted the County Government’s wildlife conservation initiatives including the planned Kitui-Tana Rive border cutline touching South Kitui and Mwingi game reserves with a view to curbing encroachment into the two protected areas, and measures to assuage human-wildlife conflict and boost wildlife conservation and consequently local tourism.

Also in attendance were the Eastern Education Officer for Wildlife Clubs of Kenya Moses Katumbi, Meru National Park’s Deputy Senior Warden Pauline Okode and Kora National Park’s Warden Mr. Langat.

Others were the Assistant Director for Tourism Margaret Katele and Senior Warden for Mwingi National Reserve Jimmy Musili.
