When I was growing up, visitors and guests to our home were more important than us, the family members. There was special cutlerly preserved for guests and normally, a special dish was always prepared for the guests.

There is nothing wrong with treating guests well, but when this unconciousness is stretched to the point of considering others as more human than ourselves, it loses meaning.

It is this attitude that later makes people to put up with abuse and poor treatment from supposedly “superior” or “privileged” people.

The reverse also happens. We can easily jump to the other extreme of despising others as an unconcious revenge for when we were despised! I have seen this happen. It is life seeking balance in our psyche.

When the balance is restored, we become aware that there is no difference between us and others and so we treat each other as we treat ourselves.

We can only treat others as we treat ourselves at any given moment. When we reject ourselves, we automatically reject others. When we accept ourselves, we automatically accept others.
