We all know, once we get to know ourselves better, the difference between flattery, truth and criticism or belittlement. But when we are caught up in our egos, we just cant handle the truth. We live on either of the extremes.
Flattery harms our character development as much as belittlement does. We like those who flatter us because they blow up our egos and we hate those who belittle us because they puncture holes in our egos. Only truth can benefit us.
So how do we know the difference? The intention behind the words. But you must be in truth yourself not to be carried away by flattery or deflated by criticism. You have no control over who flatters or hatefully criticises you but you have control over what their actions or words mean to you.
A flatterer and a critic share the same objective: to get something from you at your expense. A flatterer wants to get it from you by deceptive praise while the critic wants to get it from you by shaming you. If you are not in truth, you will be their victim sooner or later.
It is the ego which gets affected by flattery and criticism. A man of awareness brushes them off just like some dust on his coat and remains unaffected.
