The residents of Kitui now have reason to smile, following a directive by the President Kenyatta on Tuesday during the official launch of huduma number.
The president directed uniforms for all chiefs and their assistants across the country to be produced by Kitui County Textile Centre (KICOTEC).
Kitui Governor Charity Ngilu launched KICOTEC in October last year. The textile center has employed over 600 locals from Kitui County.
The declaration by the President will be a major boost for the county as it will greatly grow the service industry in Kitui the Governor Ngilu said.
Most of the fabric, materials, and accessories used in the factory are all sourced from the county. This will further expand the local distributors.
Uhuru issued the directive during the official launch of the Huduma Number exercise at Masii in Machakos county.
Ngilu joined other two Ukambani governors Dr. Alfred Mutua (Machakos) and Prof Kivutha Kibwana (Makueni) among other local leaders who attended the national event.
Last month, Interior CS Dr.Fred Matiang’i also directed all the government institutions making uniforms to use the NYS garment production factories.
Matiangi said that by making the new National Police Service uniforms at the NYS the government saved Sh700 million that could have been lost. He told cabinet secretaries whose institutions make uniforms to rely on the local materials.
The president directive has been received well by the people of kitui with many leaders asking the Governor to officially have the president Uhuru Kenyatta come to launch the ambition kitui garment plant.
