You build your awareness by exercising your power of attention. Attention is exercising the creative power of consciousness.
You start with the body. Start paying attention to your body movements. Walk purposefully, even if you are loitering around. Be alert to the fact that you are loitering.
Be alert of your steps as you walk or as you move your hands. Dont be mechanical or robotic about your body movements. Stay alert.
With time it will crystallise. After that pay attention to your mind. Be aware of your thoughts, feelings, emotions and everything in your inner world.
The idea is to become as objective as possible about what is happening inside. As you watch your thoughts and everything inner, you will be able to express yourself clearly.
You will be able to state clearly your feelings and emotions without getting bogged down by them because you are now separate from them. You have created a distance between you and them.
With time, when you have covered your mind thoroughly, your attention turns around on itself. You become aware of being aware.
Consciousness turns on itself. Beyond that, your job is done. When consciousness turns on itself, you are now getting beyond consciousness itself.
Beyond consciousness is the world of being and non being. It is the emptiness which is full of itself. Thats your home.
Start now. Become aware of your sorroundings, your body, your mind till you dissapear in the field of consciousness altogether. When you dissapear as the subjective watcher, all objects dissapear too. You are at home.
