On Thursday, March 23, 2023 – Kitui CEC Member for Agriculture and Livestock Development Dr. Stephen Kimwele Mbaya distributed emergency livestock feed supplements to farmers in Migwani Ward, Mwingi West Sub-County.
At least 1,400 households in Kitui County are set to benefit from the animal feeds courtesy of the National Drought Contingency Fund, funded by the European Union (EU) through National Drought Management Authority (NDMA) in partnership with the County Government of Kitui.
The initiative is set to insulate farmers from the prevailing harsh climate change effects that have depressed fodder production and occasioned loss of livestock including cows, goats and sheep.
The favorably nutritious drought pellets* will enable residents to cushion their livestock from hunger as they wait for rain.
Speaking during the exercise, the CEC affirmed that the distribution of the animal feed will be conducted in a transparent manner.*
He also urged farmers across the county to plant drought-tolerant crops at the onset of the March-May rains which are expected to be minimal as per the recent Weatherman’s forecast.
