President William Samoei Ruto has announced a seven-day period of national mourning following the death of Kenya’s former Prime Minister, Rt. Hon. Raila Amolo Odinga.
In an emotional address from State House, Nairobi, President Ruto described Raila as “Kenya’s foremost statesman and one of Africa’s greatest sons”, hailing his decades-long fight for democracy, justice, and human rights.
“Kenya, Africa, and the world mourn the passing of a giant of democracy, a fearless freedom fighter, and a tireless warrior of good governance,” the President said.
President Ruto lauded Raila’s lifelong dedication to national reform, crediting him for championing rights and freedoms that have shaped Kenya’s democratic journey.
In honour of Raila’s legacy, all national flags will fly at half-mast across Kenya and in all diplomatic missions abroad for seven days. The Head of State also announced that Raila will be accorded a state funeral with full honours.
A joint funeral committee will be co-chaired by Deputy President Kithure Kindiki and Siaya Senator Oburu Oginga to oversee arrangements. Meanwhile, Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi is leading a government and family delegation to India to facilitate the repatriation of Raila’s remains.
“In his passing, we have lost a patriot of uncommon courage, a pan-Africanist, a unifier who sought peace and unity above power and self-gain,” President Ruto added.
The President concluded his message by urging Kenyans to honour Raila’s memory through unity and reflection on his service to the nation.
“May his soul rest in eternal peace. May God comfort his family. May God bless Kenya.”
