Absurd. Inconsiderate. Inhumane. Thoughtless. Backward : These are some of the adjectives being used by a vast majority of Makueni residents who have come out to protest against a circular issued by the county government on access to healthcare services for the county staff.

The circular, widely described as foolish by a vast majority was issued on 11th November 2022 by the acting County Secretary Rael Muthoka on behalf of governor Mutula Kilonzo Jnr.

In the circular addressed to all staff members of the County Government, Ms Muthoka directed that healthcare services for all county staff will only be available at the County public hospitals.

Anybody who seeks such services outside Makueni county will have to pay from their pockets.

The unpopular move follows the expiry of the Staff Medical Cover yesterday (14th Nov 2022) which enabled the county employees and their dependants to access healthcare services anywhere across the country as long as they were covered.

However, in the Mutula unpopular move, the county employees are now required to visit only health facilities domiciled in Makueni County effective today (15th Nov. 2022)The directive has been roundly condemned by both residents, employees and leaders who describe it as punitive and lacking in wisdom.

“So what happens if you are a county employee and fall sick say, in Nakuru? How do you get to Makeuni for treatment” charged one of the bitter employees, and accused Mutula Jnr of running a juakali government.”

What if you are a county employee and your relative works in another county and requires health services, do they drive all the way to Makueni?” complained yet another member of staff.

Makueni residents say the circular has exposed governor Mutula Jnr as highly incompetent with many saying that they regret voting for him.The disgruntled employees and locals say that had they known, they would have voted for Patrick Musimba or even professor Mutisya or better still Loyd Masika.”Mutula is totally out of touch with reality.

There are reports that even in procuring a new medical cover for the county staff, the governor is plotting to award the tender to his cartels at a highly inflated cost to make a quick buck from the deal.
