Machakos Governor Dr alfred Mutua has said he doesnt support the plan to increase the salaries and packages of Members of Parliament.
Our economy is not doing well. We have massive unemployment, low circulation of money and Kenyans are feeling overburdened by heavy taxation.
I agree that everyone deserves a pay raise – from a casual worker to the President but this has to be matched by the economy.Let us first grow the economy because as it is, I believe, public servants are overpaid in Kenya in comparison to other nations and based on what our economy can afford, Mutua added.
I think that we, leaders, take home too much money, yet we are called servants.
I am willing to get my salary reduced to match the economy so that we have more money going towards development – which is what our youth want.
I, therefore, urge the Members of National Assembly to read the mood of the country. The timing is wrong. We cannot even afford as a country to raise salaries of workers and so raising salaries of leaders is an affront to hard working Wananchi who are our voters.
The governor was speaking after he was installed as the Patron of the Machakos County Scouts Council. The Scouting Association in Kenya is an institution that fosters true team spirit, service above self ,and these are virtues that are important in leadership.
I commend the scout leaders for doing an excellent job in moulding these young minds.
The movement is an excellent platform to teach pupils and students pertinent issues like radicalization, drug abuse and good citizenry through good mentorship.
I call on all head teachers, principals and even parents to encourage their children to enroll in the scouting clubs.
I sincerely thank the National Scouts CEO, Mr, Moses Danda, Mr Martin Maasai, Chairman-Machakos County Scouts and the entire management for conferring me this honour.
