Governor Charity Ngilu has decried the high number of early pregnancies among the youth in the country saying the trend is a threat to youth development in the society.
In a speech delivered by Deputy Governor Wathe Nzau during the first graduation ceremony at Intellects College in Kitui town, Ngilu called for firm actions on perpetrators of such dissolute acts.
“The rate of teenage pregnancies among school going children is alarming, such disturbing issue is a concern to all of us. Offenders in this case must bear swift and stern action” she said.
She however congratulated the founders of the college for establishing an institution that has drawn students from across the country saying it is a milestone in the growth of the county.
She committed the County Government’s support to needy learners in different institutions in the county noting the key role education plays in youth empowerment.
Deputy Governor Wathe Nzau encouraged the management to acquire uniforms, gowns and other clothing from the Kitui County Textile Centre (KICOTEC) that is now operational.
On her part, College Director Mrs Jacinta Mwendwa said the institution will continue imparting knowledge and skills to learners and commended the graduands for their efforts as demonstrated in their performance.
More than 60 students graduated with diplomas and certificates at the ceremony.
