Governor Charity Ngilu this evening convened a consultative meeting between Azimio la Umoja presidential candidate Raila Odinga and Ukambani professionals, businesspeople and the clergy.
In the talks, held at a Nairobi hotel, Ngilu led the Ukambani delegation in negotiating for the interests of the Lower Eastern region as it positions itself to be in the next government.
The governor is part of Mr Odinga’s campaign board in the countdown to the August 9 General Election.
Exuding confidence in the former Premier’s election as the fifth president of Kenya, the county boss regretted that Kambas had paid dearly in terms of development for being out of government for over ten years.
“We have unanimously resolved to join hands with you in your journey to State House because we’re convinced the country will be safe in your hands,”
she told the ODM luminary who was the chief guest.
Governor Ngilu said, in rallying behind Mr Odinga, the community sought representation in the country’s top leadership, resources, opportunities and shared prosperity.
She called on all professionals, businesspeople, opinion leaders and the clergy to come out boldly and lead constituents of the three counties of Ukambani into the right political direction – Azimio la Umoja.
In his remarks, Raila Odinga welcomed the delegation’s unity-of-purpose initiative noting that he was looking for partnerships with like-minded Kenyans in his quest for presidency.
“Kambas have been an integral part of Kenya’s liberation journey from fighting for self-rule. I’m pleased with their resolve to join Azimio la Umoja’s push for economic liberation,” added Raila added.
He further appreciated the problems facing the region from underdevelopment, marginalization to lack of proper representation in the national government and affirmed his commitment to address them once he ascends to power.
Also in attendance was Makueni Governor Kivutha Kibwana, Machakos deputy governor Francis Maliti (representing his boss Dr Alfred Mutua who is outside the country), State House Chief of Staff Nzioka Waita, among other leaders.
