Mwingi: Ngilu calls for calm, patience amid the identification of River Enziu tragedy victims.

Kitui Governor Charity Ngilu has pleaded for calm and patience from kin of the River Enziu bus tragedy as authorities conduct fingerprint identification of the victims’ bodies.

Speaking Monday when she met relatives of the departed at Mwingi Level Four Hospital, the Governor said the exercise would help avert possible body mix-up and further trauma to the bereaved.

“I feel your pain. I know your hearts are heavy with grief and my heart bleeds for every family that lost a relative in the horrific accident.

“But given that the demise of your loved ones was due to drowning and most of the bodies are not in good condition we pray that you bear with us as we strive to ensure proper identification, preservation, and preparation of the bodies for a decent sendoff,” pleaded the County Chief.

She also reaffirmed her administration’s commitment to supporting the affected families and the Catholic Church in every possible way during this trying moment.

Meanwhile, search and recovery operations have been concluded at the scene of the tragic accident.

According to the authorities involved in the operation, the final death toll stands at 32.

Bodies of 29 victims have so far been claimed by their families while 3 bodies remain unclaimed.

There were 16 survivors bringing the total number of occupants of the ill-fated bus to 48.

The survivors are still undergoing treatment in various hospitals within Kitui County and beyond.

The DCI, who are conducting the body identification exercise are expected to release a final report by tomorrow to pave way for burial arrangements.
