USE MANGO SOLAR DRYING TECHNOLOGY YOU HAVE LEARNED TO ASSIST MEMBERS OF YOUR CO- OPERATIVE IMPROVE THEIR INCOMES, SAYS GOVERNOR CHARITY NGILU.

Governor Charity Kaluki Ngilu has today urged a team of graduating TOTS on Value Addition to fully embrace Value Addition as the surest way of enhancing their incomes, especially during these extremely hard econonic times.

This Governor’s message was delivered by Dr. Temi Mutia, the Value Chains and Value Addition specialist in the Governors Office during the graduation ceremony of 20 Trainer of Trainers ( ToTs), who underwent a one week intensive training on Mango Value Addition at the Kitui ATC.

The training was carried out by Dr. Everlyn Musenya Okoth from JKUAT, with the support of USAID / RTI, under the Kenya Crops and Dairy Market Systems (KCDMS).

Speaking during the same occation, Mr. John Mung’oo, (the RTI/ KCDMS, Coordinator in Kitui County), said that, in the coming days, RTI will be carrying a critical evaluation of all the Horticulture Co-operative Societies after which they will support some with commercial Solar driers and other with innovative fruitfly management capabilities with the view to enhancing mango productivity and profitability in Kitui Country.

Dr. Everlyn Musenya Okoth, on her part told the TOTs to ensure that once they go back home, they must ensure that they put into full use what they have learned during the one week applied training.

The TOTs had been drawn from Ithui Horticulture in Mwingi North, Mwingi Horticulture (Waita, Kivou and Kanzanzi cluster), in Mwingi Central, Mwingi West Horticulture ( Nzeluni and Itoloni Cluster), Miambani Farmers in Kitui Central, MuiThua Farmers in Kitui East, and Mbitini Horticulture in Kitui Rural

After the training each TOT, will be expected to train another 20 ToTS from their respective Co- operative Societies to bring the total to 400.

The current crop of ToTs will in turn join an earlier one which was also trained by Dr. Everlyn in early 2020, and which had been supported by by JKUAT University, ZALF Institute (Germany) and the County Government of Kitui, to bring the number to 800 plus, well trained ToTs on Mango Value Addition in Kitui County, majority of whom are women and youth.

Dr. Temi on his part said that, the only way Kitui County, Kenya and all Sub- Saharan African Countries are ever going to get out of extreme poverty, shared hopelessness and now the diverstating negative effects of climate change is to fully adopt and consistently practice Value Addition in all their Food Production Value Systems.

Currently our Mango trees are flowering like there will be no tomorrow and Dr. Temi urged mango Co-operatives to make full use kf the solar drying technology now within their reach to minimize post harvest losses on thier mango and other fuits.
