The Speaker of the Machakos County Assembly hon Anne Mwikali Kiusya is rooting for the National Government to increase the basic salary of members of the county assemblies.
Speaking during an interdenominational thanks Giving Prayer Service at Kenyatta stadium in Machakos town on Sunday which was attended by President Dr. William Ruto, the Speaker asked the president to intervene so that Members of county assemblies can get an increment in their salaries.
The Members of the County Assembly across the country are the elected leaders who do donkey work at the ward level yet their salary is peanuts.
The debate to increase salary for MCAs has been going on across all 47 counties.
Despite Kenya having one of the world’s most progressive constitutions, her citizens have a unique perception of leadership. Kenyans are notorious for sending home most elected leaders, particularly MCAs, every election cycle.
In the mind of ordinary Kenyans, demonstrable leadership to warrant a re-election must stem from tangible grassroots initiatives in delivery of the development projects.
The clamour for a Ward development kitty is not unique.
- Salary review- To ensure MCAS are compensated competitive and fairly.
2) Reinstatement of our plenary allowance
- Ward /affirmative Fund- to assist and ensure the dream of devolution is realized at the grass roots.
- Mileage and Office imprest review.
- Double taxation of Car reimbursement.
- Financial autonomy of the assembly.
- Pension for the members regardless of the term served.
