The Kitui County Poultry Traders Savings and Credit Cooperative Society Limited has constructed a chicken abattoir at a cost of 4.2 million shillings.

The cost is part of the 9.8 million shillings funding by the National Agricultural and Rural Inclusive Growth Project (NARIGP) to the sacco, according to the society’s chairman, Mr. Mutie Ngolo. The NARIGP is one of the state corporations under the Kenya’s Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries Development Ministry.

The chicken abattoir is at the Wikililye market in Katulani District of Kitui County. Ngolo announced that the sacco has procured some processing machines for the factory at a cost of 2.6 million shillings from the 9.8 million shillings funding.

And according to him, the factory has the capacity of slaughtering some 1,000 chickens per day.

He was speaking during the sacco’s poultry farmers market meeting held at the Africa Brotherhood Church (ABC) in Kitui Town recently.

An official from the Kitui County Trade, Industry and Cooperative Development Ministry Francis Mutuku was the chief guest at the function.

Ngolo announced that in 2019 they (the sacco) were also given a 1.4 million shillings grant by the NARIGP that (the grant) enabled them to recruit a total of 5,845 poultry farmers within the Kitui County.

The cooperator announced that the sacco started in August 2018 with some forty members and that currently it has a total of 70 members from Kitui County. “The sacco has conducted a market survey in Kitui County and outside the county,” he said.

Ngolo asked the farmers to take the poultry farming seriously “so that we can satisfy the market.” You will enjoy the factory’s benefits because you will get profit annually for your supplies, Ngolo told the farmers.

Led by Tabitha Singa and Joshua Kaloki, the farmers said they will support the abattoir by supplying it with the chickens. In his speech, Mutuku said that the only way through which the farmer can benefit is by joining the Kitui County Poultry Traders Sacco.

The officer said that the sacco has a good plan for the poultry farmers. And Bernard Ng’etich, an official from the Cooperative Bank of Kenya Kitui Branch who also addressed the event, told the poultry farmers that they (the bank) have arranged with the sacco to have a model where the farmer can be paid by the bank through the MPESA after they have delivered their chickens to the sacco.
