Kitui Launches Free Facemasks Distribution To Schools

On Thursday, November 12, 2020- Kitui County launched distribution of free face masks to all 1400 Primary schools with 71,000 grade 4 and Class 8 pupils and 445 secondary schools with 27496 Form 4 students.

Speaking during the launch at Matinyani Boys in Kitui West Subcounty, Governor Ngilu said her administration is supporting schools to meet the set standards by the Ministry of Health following Education CS Prof. Magoha’s announcement on school reopening.

The move is inspired by the Ministry’s directive that schools observe mandatory requirements to ensure safety of learners.

The drive will see 200,000 washable hence reusable facemasks made in KICOTEC distributed to schools across the county.

“My administration is keen on innovation to ensure many products are produced locally thus increasing use of local products and reduce expenditure on imports”. Governor Ngilu said.

The county chief emphasized on her efforts to initiate and promote local manufacturing as key towards boosting the local economy.

On his part, County TSC Director Mr. Odipo commended the move as important saying it will relieve parents the burden to acquire masks at a cost.

In today’s launch, the county also distributed non-contact thermo guns to schools.

Education sector leadership from the Secondary and Primary schools were in attendance.
