Kitui declared the first County to eradicate the Desert Locust in Kenya

On ,Thursday, 11th June, 2020, Kitui was declared the first County to eradicate the dreaded Desert Locust in Kenya.

Kitui Deputy Governor Dr Wathe Nzau said, proper and well coordinated technical team under his supervision and a good support from H.E Governor Charity Ngilu, led to 100% decimation of Desert Locust, thus putting Kitui in books as the first County to eradicate the Desert Locust, among the Counties which were affected in Kenya.

Dr Wathe, was speaking during a closing ceremony of a two day workshop organized by Food and Agriculture Organization(FAO) in partnership with Kenya Red Cross, at a Kitui Hotel.

The participants who were drown from several departments in Kitui County Government, NGOs, National Drought Management Authority and Kitui Caritas, have developed an inclusive Monitoring, Preparedness and Response plan, to Mitigate any future occurrence of Desert Locust in the County.

Kitui CECM for Agriculture, Water and Livestock Development Emmanuel Kisangau, Kenya Red Cross’ Regional Program Coordinator Joe Mbalu and FAO representative Kenneth Langat, were among the key speakers.

Also present were officers from Kenya Red Cross headquarters Ms Eveline Munyao and Ms Tabitha Matolo.
