KITUI CGOK & FAO JOIN HANDS TO UPGRADE KABATI INTO A TOP ECONOMIC HUB

KABATI: The Kitui County Government has commenced the much awaited completion of physical land use and development plan for Kabati market; which seeks to improve physical infrastructure, Drainage, traffic control, development control and zoning of areas into proper use.

County Minister for lands, Physical Planning and Urban Development Fredrick Kimanga said the imminent upgrade of physical planning will make Kabati have essential infrastructural projects like a modern market, bus park, street lighting, access roads, enhanced storm water drainage system as well ablution blocks for increased hygiene and sanitation.

A properly planned market will attract investors and, in future, upgrade the market into town administration.

Speaking during the launch of the implementing programme; The Digital Land Governance Programme in the market on Tuesday, the lands executive expressed the County Government’s commitment to oversee the transformation of Kabati from a countryside market into a modern urban centre through the establishment of a guiding development plan and provision of other supporting logistical requirements.

The Digital Land Governance Programme is a Food & Agriculture Organisation (FAO) funded programme that will support the development of Kabati Physical and Land Use Plan in a joint partnership with the Kitui County Government.

The programme supports land use and physical planning including county spatial planning, sectoral plans and development plans.

Christopher Sowek, FAO’s cluster coordinator for Makueni, Kitui and Machakos Counties said the Digital Land Governance Programme seeks to improve food and nutrition security in the programme implementation areas expressing his optimism for recorded improvement of the livelihoods of Kabati residents at the end of the programme.

He said the programme’s expected outcome is improved security of tenure and equitable access to land and natural resources for enhancement of livelihoods and sustainable socio-economic development.

The county government will provide technical support in the form of requisite equipment and human resources i.e. surveyors, planners, and administrators in the programme.

“I am looking forward to a smooth working partnership with Kitui County Government during the implementation of this programme whose benefits are immense for her people” Sowek said during the ground truthing ceremony on Tuesday.

Another key activity of the Digital Land Governance Programme is to enhance efficient and effective land governance through the digitalization of land records and processes.

The development of Kabati Pysical and development plans was initiated by Governor Dr. Julius Malombe back in 2016 but was later shelved by his successor in 2017.

The development conscious Governor has however revived the programme upon his resumption of office.
