On Wednesday, October 25, 2023 – Kitui County Executive Committee Member for Agriculture, Dr. Stephen Kimwele, welcomed a delegation from East African Breweries Limited (EABL), led by Peter Mala, the Agricultural Field Supervisor for the Eastern Region.
The primary objective of the meeting was to discuss opportunities for strengthening the partnership between Kitui County’s Ministry of Agriculture and EABL in contract sorghum farming.
Both parties expressed their commitment to solidify this collaboration through the creation of a formal Memorandum of Understanding (MOU). This MOU is expected to provide a structured framework for a more comprehensive and mutually beneficial partnership between Kitui County and EABL.
Kitui County has established itself as a key source of sorghum for EABL, playing a crucial role in the brewery’s supply chain. Dr. Stephen Kimwele emphasized the importance of contract farming for sorghum with EABL, underscoring its role in diversifying agricultural practices. He highlighted that this partnership benefits not only farmers but also contributes to the economic development of Kitui County as a whole.
Peter Mala, the Agricultural Field Supervisor for EABL’s Eastern Region, disclosed that the company favors white sorghum over the red variety. He mentioned that EABL had previously supported local farmers by distributing 10 tonnes of free sorghum seeds in the last season, demonstrating their commitment to promoting quality and sustainable sorghum farming practices.
The meeting was also attended by the Chief Officers Gladys Kivoto (Agriculture and Fisheries) Brettah Mwangangi (Irrigation) and Director Agriculture Francis Kitoo.
