On Tuesday 23rd March , 2021 -The County Government of Kitui through the Ministry of Trade , Cooperatives and Investments revealed to have acquired 5 trucks to assist livestock traders in the transportation of their animals from various market centres within Kitui County to the Kitui and Mwingi slaughter houses.
This was revealed this morning by the County Executive Committee Member for Trade, Cooperatives and Investments Esther Kilonzi during a meeting with the County truck drivers at the Kitui Agricultural Training Centre (ATC).
According to Ms. Kilonzi, a cow losses approximately 25% of it’s weight as a result of walking long distances from the markets to slaughter houses thus becoming a loss to the traders and the county as whole.
The trucks are meant to address this challenge and increase efficiency in this sector.
“The trucks will be a major boost to not only livestock traders but also to Kitui County as a whole. Through this great milestone, the County Government of Kitui is set to create wealth as envisaged in Governor Ngilu’s 5th pillar of wealth creation” she said.
Ms.Kilonzi further called upon the truck drivers to be good ambassadors of the County Government of Kitui and to always exercise discipline in their work.
The truck drivers are set to undergo a two weeks training at ATC starting Monday 29th March.
The trucks will benefit over 700 members of the Kitui Livestock traders.
Thereafter she toured the Kitui slaughter house to oversee the ongoing works.
She was accompanied by the Director for Trade Fidelis Mwaniki and the Transport Officer Thomas Kioko.
