MESSAGE OF CONDOLENCE H.E Hon. STEPHEN KALONZO MUSYOKA FOLLOWING THE DEATH OF HON. CHARLES MUGANE NJONJO
The news of the passing on of (Mzee)Hon.Charles Mugane Njonjo this morning is sad but also celebratory of one who has lived life to it’s fullest.
Hon.Njonjo will be remembered as an icon for shaping the history of this nation and we all owe him gratitude for his contributions towards progressive constitutionalism when he served as Minister for Constitutional Affairs and as Attorney General in the independence regime.
As a stickler for the letter of the law, following the death of Kenya’s first president in 1978, Hon.Njonjo defended the constitution against a scheme seeking to bar the then Vice President from taking over power. We therefore had a smooth transition of power that ushered in President Daniel Arap Moi
He was also a valiant crusader against corruption. During the Chepkube ‘black gold’ coffee scandal,Hon.Njonjo was prepared to resign if the key perpetrators of the scandal did not resign from cabinet and parliament.
Hon.Njonjo was also an astute business man and a democratic statesman .He stood with us and supported our course as CORD and subsequently NASA.Mzee was always persuaded by his ideals and not tribal affiliation.
When I lost my mother in 2006, Hon.Njonjo visited my family to condole with us.He was indeed a caring elderly statesman.
We therefore mourn a great Kenyan and statesman who was the only surviving member of the independence cabinet.
On behalf of my family and myself,we extend our deepest condolences to the Njonjo family on the loss of Mzee.Blessed are those who mourn for the Lord God Almighty shall comfort them.
May God rest the soul of Hon. Charles Mugane Njonjo in eternal peace.
