Kitui will host the International Mother Language Day (IMLD) on 20th to 22nd February 2019 at Kenyatta University Kitui Campus.
Speaking at Kenyatta University today during a media briefing ahead of the event, County CECM for Tourism, Sports and Culture Patrick Musau said the year’s theme is “Indigenous Languages Matter for Development, Peacebuilding and Reconciliation”.
The event will be co-hosted by Kitui County Government through the Ministry of Tourism, Sports and Culture, Kenyatta University and National Ministry of Culture, Heritage (State Department of Culture and Heritage).
As a worldwide annual observance held to promote awareness of linguistic and cultural diversity and promote multilingualism, the event will involve an excursion tour to Nzambani rock, Kavea forest, Ikoo Valley and Kalundu dam ecopark.
First announced by UNESCO on 17 November 1999, it was formally recognized by the United Nations General Assembly in a resolution establishing 2008 as the International Year of Languages.
