Kirinyaga governor Ann Waiguru has said she will not be seeking re-election as governor instead opting for one of the prime minister’s position that they will propose through amendments to the BBI report. The COUNTY DIARY has learned
Waiguru has been very vocal in positioning and selling BBi in Mt. Kenya region and his new found dalliance with former nemesis Raila Odinga has bolstered her hopes of a bigger stake at the negotiating table.
According to Waiguru, BBi should be amended to have an expanded executive comprising of 2 deputy presidents and another 2 deputy prime minister of which 30 percent should be reserved for women.
Waiguru was speaking in Kisii county during a BBI conference meeting to rally support for the BBi.
In her remarks, Waiguru also said Mt. Kenya region was solidly behind BBI and Raila Odinga Presidency.
“I want to assure you Raila Odinga and the people of Kisii county that the people of Mt. Kenya are fully behind BBi and Raila Odinga. We are also ready for a Raila Odinga Presidency”, said Waiguru.” I am also up there, I want something up there”, she added.
Raila’s new found allies which also includes Machakos governor Alfred Mutua and Kitui Governor Kivuita Kibwana has thrown into disarray the NASA alliance formally comprising of former vice Presidents Kalonzo Musyoka, Musalia Mudavadi , and Ford Kenya party leader Moses Wetangula.
It seems Raila Odinga is done and dusted with the NASA coalition if his recent comments that NASA was a pre-election coalition and since they didn’t capture, the coalition was as good as dead, is anything to go by.
Waiguru said she has opted to negotiate for a position at the high table as a representative of Mt. Kenya lest the region will be out of government in 2022.
Waiguru has been part of the team allied to Raila Odinga seeking amendment to the BBi report. Its believed this group are not happy with the report in its current form and is banking on a committee of experts to include the position of a powerful prime minister with 2 deputies.
President Kenyatta has since extended the term of the BBi team for unknown period of time to lead the implementation phase of the report. Its not known however what their new mandate is and if it will be collecting second round of public views.
