On Wednesday, October 15th, 2025 – Kitui County joined the rest of the world in celebrating Global Handwashing Day through a community event held at Kasyala in Kyangwithya East Ward, Kitui Central. The celebrations emphasized the vital role of hand hygiene in preventing communicable diseases and promoting healthier communities.

Global Handwashing Day, observed annually on October 15, serves as a global platform to raise awareness about the importance of washing hands with soap as an affordable and effective way to prevent diseases and save lives. Held under the global theme “Be a Handwashing Hero,” this year’s commemoration called on individuals and communities to take personal responsibility in promoting and practising regular handwashing with soap, a simple yet powerful act that saves lives.

The event brought together local residents, health officials, and representatives from key partner organizations, including Welthungerhilfe (WHH), World Vision, the Red Cross, and UNICEF. These partners have been instrumental in supporting hygiene programs across Kitui County through initiatives such as hygiene promotion, installation of handwashing facilities, and empowerment of Community Health Promoters (CHPs).

The day’s celebrations were both educational and engaging, inspiring attendees to become “Handwashing Champions” within their communities. Organizers emphasized the importance of establishing accessible handwashing stations at home, in schools, and in public spaces to make hygiene a daily habit. Participants were also reminded that handwashing with soap under running water remains one of the most powerful tools for preventing the spread of germs. Demonstrations showcased key moments for washing hands, including after using the toilet, handling a child’s faeces, and before preparing food, eating, or feeding a baby.

Through such initiatives, the ministry of Health and Sanitation continues to champion preventive healthcare by promoting simple, consistent practices that safeguard lives and contribute to a healthier, more resilient future for all.
