Form Co-operatives As a Strategy For Wealth Creation & Climate Change Adaption, NGILU Urge Mango Farmers in Kitui.
Governor Charity Kaluki Ngilu has urged Mango Farmers in Kitui County to organize themselves into Co-operatives while at the same time adopting good mango farming practices and post harvest management as a way of adding Value to their mango and adopting to climate change.
The Governor’s message which was conveyed by Dr. Temi Mutia, the Value Chain / Value Addition Specialist in the office of the Governor during a one day Mango Stakeholders Workshop which was held today at Kwa Ukungu shopping Centre, Kyangwithya East Sub- County attended by over 200 key Mango stakeholders drawn from local SHGs / CBOs/ FBOs, Church Leaders/ Youth Leaders and model farmers.
The workshop was also addressed by Hon. Peter Mutemi ( Director – Public Participation / Civic Engagement) in the Office of the Governor, Phylis Njoki ( A Lecturer in Horticulture and a PhD Candidate on Mango Value Chain at JKUAT), The Deputy Sub- County Admn, Mr. Murage- The County Crop Officer and Mr. Cyrus Muli (the SCALEO – Kitui Central ), among others.
In her presentation, Madam Njoki informed the participants that, JKUAT is more than ready to work with the County Government to build the Capacity of Mango farmers in the County thro. training and also deploying final year and Masters Students in Horticulture as part of their field attachment. She also hinders that, through her Department, plans are underway to ensure that the quality and quantity of Kitui Mangoes is Value Added through Solar drying so as to make them marketable in the EU Market.
Mr. Murage in his part told the Mango Farmers that, in addition to the Mango improvement initiative, the County Government is also working on diary cows and indigenous chicken and urged the people of Kitui Central Sub- County in particular and the County in general to embrace both.
