On Tuesday, 5th January, 2021 -Kitui Deputy Governor Dr Wathe Nzau, CECM in the Ministry of Agriculture, Water and Livestock Development Emmanuel Kisangau and Ikutha Ward Agricultural Extension Supervisor Paul Musembi visited the the farm of Mrs Loice Musyoka Kinguta in Ndili Village, Ikutha/Kasaala Ward where swarms of Quelea quelea birds (waiver birds) have destroyed Green grams and other crops.
Dr Wathe and his team, visited several farms in Kanziko, Ikutha and Kasaala, for surveillance especially in the areas which were invaded by Swarms of desert locust, before they were decimated through aerial spraying and use of motorized pumps mounted on vehicles.
The Deputy Governor and his team, remained in the region until 6.45pm to identify the bird’s roosting sites, for a proper coordination and communication with the technical team in Nairobi, who will be doing the aerial spraying.
Speaking at the same place, CECM Kisangau assured farmers not to worry, because H.E Governor Charity Ngilu has already communicated with the Director in the office of Plants Protection Services (PPS) to help in managing the situation.
Mr Kisangau added that, all Ward Agricultural Extension Supervisors have been tasked to follow closely and report all the roosting sites for timely aerial spraying.
