In a compassionate response to the devastating effects of recent floods in Mwingi Central, Hon. Penina Malonza, the Cabinet Secretary for East African Community (EAC), Arid and Semi-Arid Lands (ASALs), and Regional Development, took proactive steps on Saturday, November 18, 2023.
The distinguished CS visited Karung’a Village, where the surging waters of River Katiliku had left 15 families in distress, the TCD DIGITAL REPORTS.
With a commitment to alleviating the plight of the affected families, CS Malonza personally distributed essential food and non-food items. In her address during the distribution event, she highlighted the Ministry’s swift response to the increasing humanitarian needs triggered by above-normal rainfall across the country.
“The government, along with various stakeholders, is actively mobilising resources to support affected communities, safeguard livelihoods, assets, and undertake emergency infrastructure repairs and maintenance,” emphasized CS Malonza. The Ministry has allocated relief supplies to priority hotspot counties, and concerted efforts are underway to address the dire situation.
Accompanying CS Malonza in this mission were the local Member of Parliament, Hon. Gideon Mulyungi, Kitui County Commissioner Erastus Mbui, religious leaders, and representatives from both National and County governments. Their collective presence underscored the collaborative approach taken to confront the challenges posed by the natural disaster.
Looking ahead, CS Malonza is set to continue her engagement with affected regions. Tomorrow, she is scheduled to be in Mombasa County, where she will meet with leaders from the Coast Region.
The focus of this meeting will be to strategize on how the government can effectively mitigate the unprecedented disaster situation affecting communities nationwide.
“In these difficult times, do what you can and exercise caution when crossing rivers and navigating flooded areas, especially during the current El Niño season,” urged CS Malonza, emphasizing the importance of community members taking precautions during this challenging period.
As the government, under the leadership of CS Penina Malonza, mobilizes resources and collaborates with stakeholders, it reaffirms its commitment to standing by the affected communities, providing relief, and working towards long-term solutions to address the impact of the ongoing natural disaster.
