Crisis In Hospitals as Blood Banks In Kitui Dry Up

Launch Blood Donations Campaign in Kitui, Residents Plead with Hospital Management.

There is a looming crisis in Public hospitals in Kitui county which has been occasioned by an acute shortage of blood in the county blood banks, the COUNTY DIARY Reports.

Kitui Ministry of Health through the Kenya National Blood Transfusion Service (KNBTS), and other partners have been asked to launch a blood donation campaign in the County to encourage the residents to donate blood.

There is a need for the people to Volunteer and visit Public hospitals and donate blood.

According to one of Kitui Clinical officer who did not want his Name Mentioned acknowledged lack of enough Blood in the Hospital bank and said several patients require Blood to survive.

The Ministry of Health and Sanitation has been asked to develop an exercise that will lead the public to volunteers and Donate blood.

“Accidents and other emergencies normally arise that require urgent blood transfusion but our blood banks have not been able to meet this need, thus leading to a crisis when blood is required to save a life, ” an officer has said.

He said Kenyans have been known to donate a lot of blood during disasters which only serves to overwhelming the blood banks, but do not donate more regularly.


According to the officer, an adult male can donate blood four times a year while a female can donate thrice.

“A normal adult normally has six litres of blood and donating a pint is just about five millilitres of the blood, ”
