Caritas Kitui, in partnership with The Brooke East Africa, has unveiled a new Sump Well Construction Project at Kauwi River aimed at improving access to clean and reliable water for communities in Kauwi Ward and Kabati Market, Kitui West.
The initiative, which will benefit over 200 households, 400 donkeys, and other livestock, also seeks to enhance small-scale irrigation for better agricultural productivity and improved livelihoods. As part of the project, a dedicated donkey water trough will be constructed about 700 meters from Kauwi River, alongside a water kiosk and storage tanks to ensure sustainable water distribution for both domestic and commercial use.
The project is being implemented jointly by Caritas Kitui, The Brooke East Africa, and the Bidii Joint Women Group—comprising 30 members—highlighting the strength of partnership and community-led development.
On Thursday, October 9, 2025, the Caritas Kitui Mtunze Punda Akutunze Project team, accompanied by the Kitui West Sub-County Water Officer, Caritas Kitui’s Water Officer Madam Ann Mwinamo, and Diocesan Hydrologist Mr. Chrispine Otieno Njega, conducted the final site verification and feasibility survey with the contractor.
The project is expected to be completed by the end of December 2025, marking a major milestone in the ongoing efforts to provide clean water, promote animal welfare, and uplift local livelihoods across Kitui County.
