Kitui County has been ranked among the top counties in local revenue collection, according to data highlighted in a recent national television broadcast on county fiscal performance.
The ranking placed Samburu County at the top with 40 per cent, followed by Garissa at 36 per cent and Narok at 35 per cent, while Kitui posted a 22 per cent performance rate, earning it a spot among the leading counties assessed.
The report was aired in the context of discussions on county financial management, with the Controller of Budget (CoB) attributing challenges in budget absorption to the rollout of the e-procurement system. The CoB noted that while the system is aimed at enhancing transparency and efficiency, its implementation has affected absorption rates across several counties.
Despite the challenges, Kitui’s inclusion among the top-performing counties underscores progress in strengthening local revenue mobilization and improving financial accountability. County officials have previously reiterated their commitment to enhancing own-source revenue collection through reforms, digitization, and enforcement.
The ranking comes amid ongoing national debates on public finance management, revenue generation, and the need for counties to reduce overreliance on national transfers by boosting local revenue streams.
