Kitui County Woman Representative Hon. Irene Kasalu on Thursday joined her fellow Members of the National Assembly Committee on Defence, Intelligence and Foreign Relations in a high-level engagement with officials from the National Intelligence Service (NIS) at the National Intelligence and Research University.
The delegation’s visit aimed to assess the progress of the institution in advancing Kenya’s national security preparedness through education, research, and capacity building. The team was received by senior NIS officials and the university’s management, who briefed the committee on ongoing programmes designed to equip intelligence officers with modern skills to tackle evolving security challenges.
During the tour, the lawmakers inspected various departments, including intelligence analysis, cyber security, counter-terrorism, and research innovation labs. The Committee commended the institution for integrating technology and knowledge-based approaches in its curriculum to meet global intelligence standards.
Hon. Kasalu lauded the efforts of the NIS and the university management in promoting professionalism and discipline among security personnel, emphasizing that intelligence remains the backbone of national stability.
“A nation’s security is built on informed minds and disciplined institutions. When we invest in knowledge, we strengthen the silent forces that keep our country safe and united,” she remarked.
The Woman Representative further noted that the committee will continue to collaborate with relevant agencies to ensure that Kenya remains proactive in addressing both internal and external threats. She underscored the need for continuous research and innovation to respond effectively to emerging security dynamics such as cybercrime, radicalization, and global terrorism.
Hon. Kasalu also called on young Kenyans to embrace careers in intelligence and defence, saying that patriotism and professionalism must remain at the core of national service. She reaffirmed her commitment to supporting policies that strengthen the security sector and protect the nation’s sovereignty.
The visit reflects Parliament’s broader mission to promote accountability, strategic investment, and institutional excellence in Kenya’s defence and intelligence systems.
