Kenya’s meat exports to the global market recorded strong growth in the last two years, increasing by 45 per cent in 2024 and a further 38 per cent in 2025, the government has revealed. However, authorities say the country’s full export potential remains largely untapped.
Speaking this afternoon after a consultative meeting with the Kenya Meat and Livestock Exporters Council (KEMLEC), the Principal Secretary for Livestock Development, Hon. Jonathan Mueke, said deliberate policy and institutional reforms are needed to unlock higher-value markets abroad.
The engagement brought together senior officials from the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock and industry players, with discussions focusing on strategic interventions to boost Kenya’s competitiveness in the international meat trade.
Hon. Mueke noted that despite the encouraging growth figures, Kenya is yet to fully leverage its vast livestock resources, particularly in arid and semi-arid regions, which hold significant potential for export-oriented production.
Key areas of concern identified during the meeting included food safety standards, livestock traceability systems, and efficient cargo consolidation, all of which are critical requirements for accessing premium global markets.
The PS emphasized that strengthening food safety frameworks will help Kenyan meat products meet strict sanitary and phytosanitary standards demanded by high-end international buyers.
On traceability, stakeholders agreed on the need for robust systems that can track livestock from farm to fork, enhancing confidence among importing countries and positioning Kenya as a reliable source of quality meat.
Cargo consolidation was also highlighted as a major bottleneck, with discussions focusing on improving logistics and reducing export costs to make Kenyan meat more competitive in overseas markets.
Hon. Mueke announced that the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock, in collaboration with sector stakeholders, is in the final stages of developing supportive policy measures to address these challenges.
He revealed that within the next few weeks, the government will unveil new policies aimed at enabling Kenyan livestock products to access premium markets globally, a move expected to significantly boost export earnings and create jobs along the livestock value chain.
