Kyalo Muli Leads Six Azimio Parties in Fresh Push for Junet Mohamed’s Resignation

National Liberal Party leader Dr. Augustus Kyalo Muli has emerged at the center of a growing storm within the Azimio la Umoja One Kenya Coalition after leading six constituent parties in calling for the resignation of Suna East MP Junet Mohamed from all coalition leadership positions.

In a strongly worded press statement, the six parties defended Azimio’s continued existence and relevance, dismissing claims that the coalition has collapsed following recent political realignments. The leaders reaffirmed that Azimio remains a legitimate opposition coalition as it begins early preparations for the 2027 General Elections.

The statement revisited Azimio’s formation on March 12, 2022, when 26 political parties united under a common reformist and democratic agenda, making it Kenya’s largest coalition party at the time. The coalition noted that it emerged from the 2022 General Elections as the majority formation in Parliament, as confirmed by the Registrar of Political Parties.

However, the coalition acknowledged that between February 2023 and December 2024, at least five parties — the People’s Liberation Party (formerly NARC-Kenya), Maendeleo Chap Chap Party, United Democratic Movement (UDM), Pamoja African Alliance (PAA), and Devolution Empowerment Party — formally exited Azimio. These departures reduced the coalition’s parliamentary numbers by 14 MPs, leaving it with about 21 affiliated parties.

Despite the setbacks, Kyalo Muli and his allies insisted that Azimio remains alive, describing coalitions as “living political agreements” that naturally evolve over time. They maintained that exits by some members do not amount to the dissolution of the coalition.

The statement paid tribute to the late Rt. Hon. Raila Odinga, crediting him with laying a strong foundation for multiparty democracy and opposition politics in Kenya. The six parties said the responsibility of safeguarding democratic space now rests with the remaining Azimio partners.

Tensions within the coalition were laid bare as the parties, under Kyalo Muli’s leadership, accused Hon. Junet Mohamed of making reckless and defamatory remarks that undermine the legacy of former President Uhuru Muigai Kenyatta. They defended Uhuru as a statesman who served the country with dignity, upheld national unity, and oversaw a peaceful transition of power.

The parties went further to demand Junet Mohamed’s immediate retirement from all Azimio leadership roles, citing not only his public utterances but also unresolved concerns over the alleged mismanagement of agents’ funds during the 2022 General Elections. According to the statement, the mishandling of funds weakened grassroots operations and compromised electoral vigilance at a critical moment.

In a bid to reset the coalition, the six parties formally called on Azimio Patron and former President Uhuru Kenyatta to convene a consultative meeting of all remaining Azimio-affiliated parties. The proposed meeting would chart a new leadership direction following major changes within the coalition, including the death of Raila Odinga, the exit of Martha Karua, and the anticipated resignation of Junet Mohamed.

They also urged that vacant positions within the National Executive Council and other governing organs be filled to restore discipline, accountability, and unity within the coalition.

Reaffirming Azimio’s opposition role, Kyalo Muli and the six parties stressed that the decision by one member party to join government does not translate into the entire coalition doing the same. They vowed to remain a vocal and credible opposition force.

“The people are watching. History is listening,” the statement read, as the leaders pledged to rebuild Azimio into a stronger, leaner, and more united coalition ahead of the 2027 elections.
