Pastor James Irungu on Tuesday collapsed in Murang’a town while attempting an 80-hour tree-hugging challenge aimed at raising awareness about cancer. He was immediately rushed to Murang’a County Hospital for medical attention.
Witnesses said Pastor Irungu fell moments before completing his target, after having already surpassed the previous 72-hour Guinness World Record set by Truphena Muthoni. At the time of the incident, he was only minutes away from reaching the 80-hour mark.
The challenge, which had attracted a crowd of supporters and curious onlookers, was intended to draw public attention to the growing burden of cancer and the need for early screening and support for patients.
Medical officials at Murang’a County Hospital confirmed that Irungu was admitted for observation, citing extreme exhaustion and dehydration as possible causes of the collapse. His condition was reported to be stable.
Supporters and local leaders have praised Pastor Irungu’s determination and sacrifice, saying his effort successfully highlighted the cancer awareness message he set out to champion, despite not completing the final minutes of the challenge.
