On December 18, 2025 — Kitui County Government stepped up efforts to address the ongoing drought situation following a high-level County Steering Group (CSG) meeting chaired by Deputy Governor H.E. Wambua Kanani on Thursday.
The meeting brought together county departments and development partners to review the current drought status and assess its impact across key sectors. Those identified as most affected include agriculture, livestock, water, public health and sanitation (nutrition), and education, with particular concern raised over Early Childhood Development Education (ECDE).
Discussions focused on strengthening coordination and preparedness under the Kitui County Disaster Mitigation, Response and Recovery Plan for the FY 2025/2026. The committee examined ongoing interventions, existing gaps, and priority actions required to cushion vulnerable communities against the effects of prolonged dry conditions.
Deputy Governor Kanani emphasized the importance of early action, multi-sectoral coordination, and accountability to ensure timely and effective response. He noted that a unified approach among stakeholders would be critical in minimizing losses to livelihoods, health, and learning outcomes.
At the close of the meeting, all partners agreed on a common action plan to guide a joint drought response for the period January to March 2026. The plan outlines targeted interventions across the affected sectors, resource mobilization strategies, and mechanisms for monitoring implementation.
The County Government reaffirmed its commitment to working closely with national agencies, humanitarian partners, and local stakeholders to protect lives and livelihoods as Kitui navigates the current drought cycle.
