The Kitui County Government has intensified road safety awareness efforts across the county in a renewed campaign aimed at reducing road accidents and promoting responsible road use, especially during the busy festive season.
The comprehensive initiative is being implemented in partnership with key stakeholders, including the Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA), the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA), the Kenya Matatu Association, Boda Boda leadership, and other transport sector players.
According to county officials, the campaign seeks to promote a culture of safety among motorists, boda boda riders, pedestrians, and passengers through sustained public sensitization and stakeholder engagement. Emphasis has been placed on adherence to traffic laws, proper rider training, vehicle roadworthiness, and mutual respect among all road users.
In a related development, the County Government has rolled out a targeted Festive Season Road Safety Awareness Campaign in Kitui South, spearheaded by the Department of Transport and Boda Boda. The campaign runs from 15th to 17th December 2025, a period characterized by increased travel during the Christmas and New Year holidays.
Branded “Road Safety Awareness This Festive Season,” the initiative is guided by the message “Oparesheni Fika Salama, Uhai Kwanza,” underscoring the importance of prioritizing human life and ensuring safe arrival for all travelers.
Key focus areas of the campaign include urging drivers to avoid overspeeding, refrain from drink-driving, and strictly observe traffic regulations. Boda boda riders are being encouraged to wear protective gear, particularly helmets, and to avoid carrying excess passengers, while passengers are being reminded to fasten seat belts and speak out against reckless driving.
The awareness activities are being conducted at transport hubs, busy urban centres, and along major highways across the county, with officers engaging directly with road users.
County Executive Officer for Transport, Ketonya Musya, reaffirmed the county’s commitment to safer roads, noting that collaboration with national agencies and transport stakeholders is critical in addressing road safety challenges.
The County Government has called on all road users to take personal responsibility and play their part in making Kitui roads safe, reiterating that road safety is a shared responsibility and a key pillar in protecting lives and livelihoods during the festive season and beyond. 🚦🤝
