The County Government of Kitui, through the Department of Transport and the Boda Boda sector, on Monday convened a multi-stakeholder consultative meeting on road safety in Kitui Town, bringing together key players in the transport and safety ecosystem.
The engagement attracted representatives from the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA), Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA), Traffic Police, Matatu and Taxi Associations, Boda Boda leadership, and members of the Kitui County Transport and Safety Committee. The meeting focused on strengthening coordination and collective action to curb rising road accidents in the county.
The consultative forum sought to reduce road traffic risks and fatalities, especially during the ongoing festive season, by promoting shared responsibility among stakeholders and implementing evidence-based road safety interventions.
In his opening remarks, the County Executive Committee Member (CECM) for Roads, Public Works and Transport, Eng. Reuben Itiko, emphasized the importance of collaboration in addressing the surge in road carnage. He called on all stakeholders to jointly identify practical solutions and enforce effective measures to reduce road crashes across the county.
“During this festive season, let us renew our commitment to the goal of zero accidents,” Eng. Itiko urged, noting that collective vigilance and adherence to traffic regulations could save lives.
On his part, the Chief Officer for Transport and the Boda Boda Sector, Mr. Peter Ketonya Musya, announced the rollout of countywide public awareness and education campaigns on road safety scheduled for December 16th and 17th, 2025. The initiative, dubbed “Oparesheni Fika Salama, Uhai Kwanza,” will involve community sensitization aimed at instilling a culture of road safety and shared responsibility among road users.
“Through these integrated interventions, Kitui County can significantly reduce festive-season accidents, protect vulnerable road users, and foster safer mobility for all,” Mr. Musya said.
The meeting concluded with a strong call to action, urging all stakeholders to play their respective roles in ensuring safer roads during the festive period and beyond.
Also present at the consultative meeting were Kitui Deputy County Commissioner Ms. Dorcas Rono and senior officers from the Ministry of Roads.
