According to reliable sources within the Wiper Democratic Movement, top party mandarins under the Wiper Patriotic Front are quietly working behind the scenes to decide who will fly the party’s flag in the hotly contested Kitui gubernatorial race. Reports indicate that the Wiper certificate for governor will likely go to either Kitui Woman Representative Hon. Irene Kasalu or Kitui Central MP Dr. Makali Mulu, PhD, both of whom enjoy strong grassroots support and close ties with the party leadership.
The move is part of a broader strategy by the party to consolidate its dominance in Kitui County ahead of the 2027 general elections. Hon. Kasalu, known for her firm grassroots network and focus on women and youth empowerment, is said to be a favourite among a section of the Wiper National Executive Council. On the other hand, Dr. Mulu’s technocratic background and development record have earned him respect from professionals and opinion leaders across the county, making him a formidable contender for the ticket.
Should either Kasalu or Mulu secure the nomination, they will face stiff competition from CPA Nicholas Mulila, a respected corporate executive, and former Governor Charity Ngilu, who is reportedly eyeing a comeback to reclaim the county’s top seat. The entry of these heavyweights is expected to make the Kitui gubernatorial contest one of the most fiercely fought races in the Eastern region.
