Kitui South, Kenya – May 16, 2025 — Residents of Kitui South are celebrating a major boost in healthcare services following the official launch of a renovated and fully equipped maternity unit and theatre at Mutomo Mission Hospital.
The project, funded by the M-PESA Foundation, was officially handed over on Thursday by Nicholas Mulila, Chief Corporate Security Officer at Safaricom PLC. He was accompanied by Karen Basiye, Director of Sustainable Business, Social Impact, and M-PESA Foundation at Safaricom PLC.
Speaking during the handover ceremony, Mulila reaffirmed Safaricom’s commitment to improving healthcare access in rural Kenya. “We are proud to partner with Mutomo Mission Hospital to ensure mothers and children in this region receive quality maternal care,” he said.
Karen Basiye noted that the initiative aligns with M-PESA Foundation’s broader agenda to support maternal and child health. “Access to safe and modern maternity care should not be a privilege, but a basic right for every Kenyan,” she stated.
The residents of Mutomo and the larger Kitui South area welcomed the development with gratitude, praising the Safaricom M-PESA Foundation for its continued investment in community health and well-being.
The upgraded maternity unit is expected to greatly reduce maternal and infant mortality rates in the region and ease the pressure on healthcare workers by providing a safer, more efficient environment for deliveries and emergency obstetric care.
Mutomo Mission Hospital, which has served the region for decades, is now better positioned to handle complex maternity cases thanks to this vital support.
