Nyamira Governor Amos Nyaribo has been removed from office after 23 Members of the County Assembly (MCAs) voted in favour of an impeachment motion on Tuesday. The motion, tabled amid rising political tensions and claims of mismanagement, garnered the constitutionally required majority, effectively ending Nyaribo’s tenure pending Senate confirmation.
According to Nyamira County Assembly Speaker Thaddeus Nyabaro, the Assembly followed all legal procedures in conducting the impeachment. Speaking after the vote, Nyabaro confirmed that his office will immediately communicate the Assembly’s decision to Senate Speaker Amason Kingi, as required by law, to initiate the next phase of the process.
The Senate will now be tasked with determining whether to uphold or overturn the County Assembly’s decision. This could be done either through a special committee investigation or a full plenary hearing, where the Governor will have an opportunity to defend himself against the allegations tabled by the MCAs.
The ouster marks a significant political shift in Nyamira County, where divisions between the Executive and the Assembly have been growing in recent months. The impeachment motion cited alleged abuse of office, financial impropriety, and failure to uphold good governance—claims that have stirred mixed reactions from residents and local leaders.
As the county awaits the Senate’s next steps, operations within the county government are expected to continue under the leadership of the Deputy Governor, pending the final verdict. The development sets the stage for a high-stakes Senate process that will determine the political future of Governor Nyaribo and the stability of Nyamira County’s leadership.
