President William Ruto has revealed that his administration is investing more than KSh110 billion in transformative development projects across Kitui, Machakos, and Makueni counties, marking the largest development intervention ever undertaken in the region. Speaking at the Kitui State Lodge while addressing over 10,000 grassroots leaders, the President said the extensive programme is evidence of his government’s commitment to equitable development across the country.

A key focus of the investment is the affordable housing programme, where KSh64 billion will fund the construction of 44,000 housing units, 15,000-bed capacity student hostels, and 39 fresh produce markets. According to the President, these projects will not only provide decent housing but will also stimulate local economies through job creation and urban regeneration.

To further enhance regional integration and spur trade, the government is undertaking the upgrading of 600 kilometres of road infrastructure at a cost of KSh30 billion in the first phase. Ruto noted that improved connectivity will open new economic frontiers, ease the movement of goods, and enhance access to essential services across the three counties.

The President also confirmed that his government has committed KSh9.6 billion towards the completion of the Thwake Multipurpose Dam, a flagship project now in its final phase. Once completed, the dam will provide reliable water for domestic consumption, irrigation, and industrial activities, boosting food security and supporting economic growth within the region.

Ruto emphasized that no previous administration has invested at this scale in Ukambani, saying the initiative represents a deliberate effort to address historical marginalisation and unlock the region’s economic potential. “Never before has any other administration undertaken development of this scale and impact in this region,” he affirmed.

The Head of State urged leaders and residents to support the ongoing programmes, noting that inclusive development requires collaboration between national and county governments, as well as community participation. He further highlighted that the projects are designed to benefit ordinary citizens first by creating opportunities for employment and enterprise.

The meeting at Kitui State Lodge brought together elected leaders, opinion shapers, and representatives from grassroots groups from the three counties. The President used the platform to share his government’s development scorecard and outline future plans, assuring residents that the region remains a top priority in Kenya’s transformation agenda.
