President William Ruto has announced that the national government will allocate Sh200 million for the construction of a new Level 4 hospital in Mutito, Kitui County. The facility will be named Nzamba Kitonga Memorial Hospital in honour of the late Senior Counsel Nzamba Kitonga, the distinguished legal mind who chaired the Committee of Experts (CoE) that drafted Kenya’s 2010 Constitution.
The President made the announcement on Friday during a high-level consultative meeting with Kitui Governor Dr. Julius Malombe and top county health officials at State Lodge Kitui. Discussions centred on strengthening collaboration between national and county governments to bolster healthcare delivery across Kitui and the wider region.
President Ruto reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to ensuring that universal healthcare becomes a reality under the Social Health Authority.
“We are collaborating with county governments in improving and strengthening the provision of universal healthcare,” he said.
“We are ensuring that primary healthcare and social health insurance comprehensively serve the people of Kenya.”
He further noted that the government is modernising public health facilities through the National Equipment Service Programme, which deploys advanced diagnostic and treatment technologies—including MRI, CT scanners, X-ray and ultrasound machines—through a fee-for-service model to ensure sustainability and wider access.
“As part of our discussions, we agreed that the National Government will provide Sh200 million to build a Level 4 facility at Mutito, to be named Nzamba Kitonga Memorial Hospital, in honour of the late chairman of the Committee of Experts,” President Ruto confirmed.
The new hospital is expected to significantly boost healthcare access for thousands of residents in Mutito and neighbouring areas, reducing the need to travel long distances for specialised medical services.
The announcement marks another milestone in the ongoing efforts to improve healthcare infrastructure in Kitui County, following recent equipment upgrades and continued cooperation between the county administration and the national government.
