The National Government is set to implement a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed in March 2024 between the County Government of Kitui and the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS), aimed at enhancing the conservation and management of game reserves and conservancies within the county.

The collaboration seeks to ensure that the South Kitui Game Reserve plays a key role in driving local economic growth through job creation, improved infrastructure, and increased revenue for the county.

Gazetted in 1979, the South Kitui Game Reserve has long remained underdeveloped despite its vast potential for eco-tourism and wildlife conservation. Once fully rehabilitated and operational, the reserve is expected to become a major tourism attraction, boosting the county’s visibility and economic fortunes.

Kitui Governor Dr. Julius Malombe today hosted KWS Director General Professor Erustus Kanga and his delegation at his office to discuss the implementation framework of the MoU and chart the way forward.

Governor Malombe welcomed the renewed partnership, describing it as a vital step in realizing his administration’s goal of unlocking Kitui’s tourism potential and ensuring that natural resources benefit local communities.
