Kitui County has once again earned national recognition for its exemplary progress in implementing devolution, standing out among the few privileged counties that hosted President Dr. William Ruto during the official opening of the 9th Devolution Conference. The event, held at Homa Bay High School in Homa Bay County, brought together leaders from across the country to reflect on over a decade of devolved governance.
Leading the Kitui delegation was Governor Dr. Julius Malombe, accompanied by Deputy Governor Augustine Kanani, senior county officials, and a team of exhibitors. The county showcased an impressive array of development milestones, drawing praise from both national and international delegates attending the high-profile convention.
President Ruto, in his remarks, lauded Kitui County for its outstanding demonstration of devolution in action, describing it as a model of progress and prudent governance. He noted that the county’s steady growth under Governor Malombe’s leadership was a testament to how effective devolution can transform lives when resources are well-managed.

Throughout the opening day, hundreds of delegates visited the Kitui exhibition booth, eager to learn more about the county’s success stories. The booth became one of the most vibrant spots at the conference, attracting leaders, investors, and development partners impressed by the county’s strategic approach to inclusive growth and sustainability.
The Kitui exhibition highlighted significant achievements across key sectors, including healthcare, water development, agriculture, education, infrastructure, trade, and tourism. Visitors also learned about the county’s ongoing empowerment programs targeting women, youth, and persons with disabilities, which have contributed to social and economic transformation at the grassroots.

In addition to its development milestones, Kitui’s booth offered a captivating display of the county’s vast natural and cultural wealth. Delegates were treated to samples of the renowned Kitui honey, finely woven baskets, unique woodcraft items, and traditional Kamba cuisine that gave a taste of the region’s rich heritage.
Governor Malombe, speaking during an interview at the event, reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to driving inclusive development and ensuring that every Kitui resident benefits from devolution. He emphasized that the progress achieved so far is a result of visionary leadership, strategic planning, and strong partnerships with both national and international stakeholders.

The week-long conference, themed “For the People, For Prosperity: Devolution as a Catalyst for Equity, Inclusion, and Social Justice,” aims to foster dialogue on strengthening devolved governance and promoting shared prosperity across all counties. It provides a platform for counties to showcase innovations, share experiences, and learn from each other’s successes.
Delegates from various sectors — including policymakers, development partners, private investors, and academia — are participating in panel discussions and exhibitions designed to advance the devolution agenda. The event also offers opportunities for networking and collaboration among counties and institutions driving Kenya’s development.

As the conference continues, Kitui County remains a shining example of what focused leadership and effective implementation of devolution can achieve. With Governor Malombe at the helm, the county continues to position itself as a beacon of progress, innovation, and inclusive growth in the region and beyond.
