Kitui Governor Dr. Julius Malombe has unveiled the Kitui Tourism Circuit, a landmark initiative aimed at promoting the county’s untapped natural and cultural heritage. The colorful launch event was held at the iconic Nzambani Rock on World Tourism Day 2025, drawing hundreds of residents, tourism stakeholders, and government officials.

In his address, Governor Malombe said the new tourism circuit represents a transformative step in positioning Kitui as a premier destination for nature, culture, and adventure. He emphasized that the initiative will open up investment opportunities, create employment, and stimulate economic growth through tourism-related enterprises.

“This is a bold move to showcase our beauty, culture, and history to the world,” said Malombe. “From our breathtaking game reserves and eco-parks to our bird sanctuaries and heritage sites, Kitui is a treasure waiting to be explored.”The governor revealed that his administration is already investing in modern infrastructure within the circuit, including entry gates, eco-parks, and security systems, to ensure a seamless and safe experience for visitors. He noted that the county is working closely with the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) and other conservation partners to protect wildlife habitats and preserve the environment.

Among the major attractions highlighted in the circuit are the South Kitui Game Reserve, Mwingi North Game Reserve, and the Mutomo Reptile Park, each known for their rich biodiversity and scenic landscapes. The circuit will also link to cultural villages, waterfalls, and rocky hills that define the county’s unique terrain.Malombe reiterated that tourism development will not only attract domestic and international tourists but also empower local communities. He urged residents to embrace eco-tourism practices, establish guesthouses, and market local products such as crafts, honey, and traditional cuisines to benefit from the sector’s growth.

“We are calling upon investors, youth, and women groups to explore opportunities in the tourism and hospitality value chain,” the governor said. “This is our moment to tell the Kitui story to the world and make tourism a pillar of our economy.”

Tourism stakeholders lauded the initiative, noting that the county has for years remained a hidden gem despite its potential. They described the circuit as a well-timed project that could diversify Kitui’s economy, which has long relied on agriculture and mining.

The launch event featured traditional dances, cultural displays, and exhibitions showcasing local art, beadwork, and cuisine. Visitors also had the chance to climb the famous Nzambani Rock, which offers panoramic views of Kitui’s rugged landscape. With the tourism circuit now in motion, Kitui joins a growing list of counties investing in the tourism sector to boost regional development. The event marked a historic milestone, setting the stage for Kitui’s emergence as one of Kenya’s must-visit destinations for eco-tourism and cultural exploration./////_
