Kitui Central MP Dr. Makali Mulu has faulted the government for what he termed as misplaced priorities following the signing of the Computer Misuse and Cybercrime Amendment Bill into law. The legislator argued that while the government claims the bill seeks to protect children from exposure to harmful online content, it has failed to address more pressing issues affecting the same children, such as lack of essential medicines in hospitals.

Dr. Mulu questioned the government’s sincerity in caring for the welfare of children, saying that true protection begins with ensuring access to quality healthcare. He noted that many public hospitals continue to face acute shortages of drugs and basic medical supplies, leaving vulnerable children without the care they need. “If the government truly cared about the welfare of our children, it would first ensure that every child can access healthcare,” he said.

The lawmaker further expressed concern that the amended law gives the state excessive powers to block websites and online platforms without prior notice. He warned that such provisions could easily be abused to suppress dissenting voices and limit citizens’ freedom of expression online.

According to Dr. Mulu, the bill represents a broader attempt by the government to control digital spaces rather than protect public interest. He cautioned that democracy thrives on free speech and open debate, not censorship and intimidation.

He urged the government to redirect its energy and resources towards addressing urgent social and economic needs affecting Kenyans, including healthcare, food security, and education. “Kenya needs leadership that prioritizes people’s needs over political control,” Dr. Mulu emphasized.
